I have to agree with you: it never happened! Four years ago, in one of my responses to this kid's college project about taping, I said:
"When all of us [Bluegrass Alliance and Newgrass Revival alumni] got together at Bickel's place in Louisville this past December 2008, I was fixated on being sure to ask Sam Bush and Tony Rice one simple question. And I did. I asked each of them, "Did you ever play with The Grateful Dead?" Sam told me he never did. But Tony told me he played with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman together on a recording project." Your essay-blog and the image-scan of the poster you provided for the Peace, Love and BG Festival in late July show Bluegrass Alliance and Newgrass Revival are listed, and so is Jerry Garcia. What if OAITW and all these bands played there in late July? Is it possible Bluegrass Alliance, Newgrass Revival and OAITW never crossed paths or hooked up in any way, shape or form, whatsoever? This is hardly believable. In Dec 2008 when I asked Sam Bush about playing with GD or Jerry, he did tell me he saw GD once [1970-ish] when he was on the west coast. He described it as being outdoors [freebie?] in the streets. Sam told me, "The band was pretty far away from me. Jerry Garcia was only 'this big'," and he held his hand up with thumb and index finger two inches apart. My thinking is, Sam and Newgrass Revival would have at least remembered something about 'being at' any 1973 Festival where Jerry also played. None of the Bluegrass Alliance players with whom I was roommates, soundman, and taper in 1975 and 1976 ever mentioned to me anything about BG Alliance playing with Jerry Garcia, or being anywhere near him. I could add comments or write essays about particular promoters (and particular band leaders) who have screwed up gigs that I was involved with back in the day. As you say in your piece, "There's a lot to say about that, but this is not the place."
